Car and Motorcycle Sales in Indonesia Recover in March 2014
Car and motorcycle sales increased rapidly in Indonesia throughout March 2014, primarily due to an improved distribution network. In the previous months, heavy rains amid a peak of the rainy season (causing floods in various parts of Indonesia) resulted in the postponement of car and motorcycle purchases. Data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) indicated that car sales surged 18 percent (year-on-year, yoy) to 113,277 units in March 2014, while motorcycle sales grew 9.2 percent (yoy) to 728,820 units.
Besides logistics, easing inflation and a stable Indonesian rupiah exchange rate were also important factors that explain the recovery in car and motorcycle sales in March 2014. In the months February and March, inflation was low at 0.26 percent and 0.08 percent respectively. Inflation in Southeast Asia's largest economy has moderated from 8.38 percent (yoy) at year-end 2013 to 7.32 percent (yoy) in March 2014. This easing trend is expected to continue in the months ahead. Indonesia's inflation is projected to reach about 5 percent (yoy) by the end of 2014.
Meanwhile, the rupiah - after having depreciated over 21 percent against the US dollar in 2013 - has been one of the best performing emerging currencies in 2014 so far.
Indonesian car sales in the first quarter of 2014 grew 11 percent (yoy) to 328,554 units, about twice as much as overall economic growth in Indonesia.
Based on data provided by the Indonesian Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (AISI), motorcycle sales in the first quarter of 2014 totaled 1.99 million units, up one percent from the same quarter in 2013.
