Official Result of the Indonesian Legislative Election 2014 Released
Only minutes ahead of the deadline on Friday (09/05), the General Election Commission (KPU) released the official results of Indonesia’s 2014 legislative election. As had been expected, the official result is highly similar to the quick count results that had been published on the day of election (09/04). The current main opposition party the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) won the election, securing 18.95 percent of the vote, followed by Golkar (14.75 percent) and the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) with 11.81 percent.
Of the twelve parties that participated in the election, two failed to meet the electoral threshold. These are the Crescent Star Party (PBB) and the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI). A minimum requirement of 3.5 percent of the vote was needed to win a seat in Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR).
Data from the KPU showed that the Indonesian electorate numbered 185.6 million (of a population that totals 250 million people), 30 percent of which (approximately 60.6 million) did not use their voting right.
Based on "Law 42 - 2008 on Presidential Elections", a minimum of 25 percent of the popular vote is required in the legislative election (or twenty percent of seats in the House of Representatives, DPR) to give a political party - or a coalition of political parties - the power to nominate a presidential candidate. Therefore, the parties are currently busy trying to form coalitions. The country’s presidential election will be held on 9 July 2014.
