COVID-19 Vaccines Have Arrived But Are Politicians and Mainstream Media Giving Us False Hopes?
Last month, we started to become a bit optimistic after reading reports that COVID-19 immunization programs were taking off, both in Indonesia (per 13 January 2021) and abroad. Moreover, it was reported that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have an efficacy rate of around 95 percent.
In the mainstream media it was reported as if the end of the COVID-19 crisis was in sight. Such media reports are obviously based on statements made by politicians, international organizations (including NGOs), and the pharmaceutical companies that produce the vaccines.
Unfortunately, after doing some desk research, we have come to the conclusion that most reports about the vaccines’ efficacy rates as well as the likelihood of existing vaccines triggering a quick end to governments’ social and business restrictions (or lockdowns) are superficial, and certainly not based on investigative journalism. And it is yet another reminder that people need to do their own research if they want to be informed more accurately or – at least – get a more balanced perception of reality.
