Indonesia's 2020 Population Census: Characteristics of the Indonesian Population
On 21 January 2021, Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik, or BPS) released its long-awaited ‘Population Census 2020’. This study gives us various crucial data on the Indonesian population, including population size, age structure, and birth rate.
Indonesian Law No. 16 of 1997 on Statistics orders a population census to be carried out every ten years (in a year ending with a zero). The Population Census 2020 is the seventh census that has been conducted by the Indonesian government, with the previous six population censuses being released in 1961, 1971, 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010. So, these censuses give us great insight into certain developments related to the Indonesian population. For investors too, this is important information.
Contrary to previous censuses that were done solely using traditional methods of research (namely going from house to house, physically, and record each resident), the Population Census 2020 also made use of data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Ditjen Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The 2020 census also made more use of online data collection. This was partly the consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic that discouraged face-to-face interviews.
