Number of Internet Users in Indonesia Rises to 171 Million
Based on the latest survey of the Association of Internet Service Providers in Indonesia (APJII), the number of Internet users in Indonesia reached 171.17 million individuals at the start of 2019, or approximately 64.8 percent of the total Indonesian population. The survey, which involved ‘probability sampling’ and ‘multistage random sampling’, has an error margin of 1.28 percent.
Jamalul Izza, General Chairman of APJII, commented on the survey saying strong growth in the number of Indonesian Internet users in combination with the fact that there are still many among the nation’s 267 million population who are not online means that there remains ample room for further growth.
Moreover, the Indonesian government has been eager to create an undersea fiber-optic cable network across the country to offer affordable as well as fast Internet access to all people. This project is the Palapa Ring project that is expected to be fully completed by August 2019. Main challenge of this project is the eastern part of Indonesia where nature is rugged. Meanwhile, Internet providers too have been busy establishing telecommunication infrastructure across the country.
