Seiring dengan semakin tingginya daya beli masyarakat Indonesia, pembelian kendaraan bermotor, seperti sepeda motor dan mobil, pun terus meningkat. Tahun 2012, berdasarkan data Asosiasi Industri Sepeda Motor Indonesia (AISI), penjualan sepeda motor memang ada penurunan sebanyak 12 persen, yakni dari 8,01 juta unit pada tahun 2011 menjadi 7,06 juta unit tahun 2012. Salah satu faktor yang berada di balik penurunan itu adalah adanya kebijakan pemerintah mengenai persyaratan uang muka kredit kendaraan bermotor yang diberlakukan sejak pertengahan tahun 2012.

In recent years, Indonesia's car sales have shown robust growth, culminating in a record high number of 1.12 million sold car units in 2012. This is an important statistic because car sales inform us about the state of the economy. Generally, rising car sales indicate an expanding economy while declining car sales indicate that the economy is slowing down. When we take a look at the table below, there is a link visible between Indonesia's GDP growth and rising car sales, except for 2011 to 2012 when GDP growth declined while car sales rose.

HSBC's latest release of the Indonesia Manufacturing PMI did not paint a positive picture as Indonesia's manufacturing activity was reported to have contracted sharply in August 2013. The index declined to a 15-month low amid a contraction of output, new orders and export business. Payroll numbers fell at the fastest rate in the history of the HSBC survey. The August index stood at 48.5, down from 50.7 in July 2013, and marks the fourth consecutive month of decline. A reading below 50.0 indicates a contraction in manufacturing activity.

In order to curb imports of oil, the government of Indonesia intends to stimulate the production of crude palm oil-based biofuel by increasing the mandatory content of fatty acid methyl ester (which is made from palm oil) in biodiesel products from 7.5 percent to 10 percent. Through this policy, the government claims to be able to save up to USD $3 billion as it needs less fuel imports. Fuel imports totaled USD $5.8 billion in the first six months of 2013 and form a major cause for the USD $9.8 billion current account deficit in Q2-2013.
